Early September puts American operations through two things at once. Calves and lambs come off their mothers already carrying stress, and the first real wind and rain of fall are a few weeks behind. A livestock shelter goes up in that window, and the instinct is to close it in tightly, which turns out to be wrong.
Damp is the thing that costs animals condition, not cold
A grown cow puts several gallons of water into the air each day through breath alone, and bedding and manure add more. In a closed building that vapor has nowhere to go. It condenses on cold surfaces, on the underside of the roof, and eventually on the animals.
Wool and winter hair insulate the way a down jacket does, by holding still air in a lofted layer. Wet that layer and it collapses, exactly like a jacket through the wash. The animal is then standing in humid air with no insulation, which is worse than standing in dry cold.
